Discovery Task #19 Wiki Scavenger Hunt
I thought this was a fun and valuable exercise, to get us to use the wiki more, in searching for items found on the wiki- who knew there was a promo materials brochure-that introduces the trees by the library-I honestly did not know we had that available for staff and patrons alike- I had time to work on this lesson for awhile, so it was great to have the time to do so, and see what I have been missing on the wiki-I even got 100% on the quiz, which I thought was awesome. Can't wait for task #20.

#18 Discovery Task Tiny Url and Zamar
Well this task didn't take too long to do at all- I went into u tube videos and pulled up the video of the jeep commercial from last year, where the dude is driving the jeep and the animals and the dude start singing "rock me gently" I have loved that since it came out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45Vok2fM7Lg
Whew! finally after about 1/2 an hour I was able to figure out how zamar worked, it took me awhile to figure it out, but once I did- it was pretty cool- I downloaded of all things, you guessed it- a daschund puppy-it was the cutest little doggie...

Discovery Task #17: :Library Professional Sites

I did this task and found some very interesting sites on this webolution assignment. The first site that caught my eye was the 100 best sites for librarians of the future, there are sites like "Paper Cuts" which keep you up on new authors-the "Bilingual Librarian" which is all about collections and systems that make the world's top libraries special. I thought 100 sites were a little too many to go into all at once- but its nice to see that its out there.

Discovery Task #16 Open Office
ll finally was able to find some time and experiment with open office- I think it is a great soft ware package, I loved playing the little sound bites that you clicked on- it was fun to listen to each of those. I think this is great to let our patrons know that it is free and available to them- without having to pay for it. I will experiment with open office when I have more time to do so.

#15 Task Clip
I was not able to clip anything when I experimented with this task, I worked on it for a couple of hours, but it didn't ever work for me, so really not sure what I did wrong. I was able to highlight what I wanted clipped- but when I went to do it, nothing happened.
Hopefully task #16 will be better.

Task #14 Downloads
Finally!!! Got to finish task #14- I had never downloaded and audio book before, and now that I did I intend to get speakers and sound hooked back up to my computer at home- I think it would be fun to listen to a book when I am folding laundry, or doing dishes. I thought it was easy to do!!
Since I have completed this task, guess I will go and check in books.

Discovery Task #13 Music Downloads
I had fun doing sound snap- very interesting with all the sounds they provide- it was fun to pull up dogs barking, cats purring, children giggling. Not sure how I would use the sounds at the library- but I thought it was pretty neat, to pull different things up and listen to them.

Discovery Task #12
I have used novelist alot in the past couple of years, I really like how you can put in a series and find the title of the book, and the number sequence of the order the books are in the series- I have used this a lot for "Hank the Cowdog", Box car children and others that have multiple books published under the same author.

Author Resources on the Web Task #11

Finally finished discover task #11- I had fun going into the book report network and playing around with all the different book sites that are out there. I think this would be a good site to let our patrons know about. Has lots of good information on authors. I really liked the "Books to Movies" web site- as that lets you know what movies are coming out that were previous books. Would really like to see the "Time Traveler's Wife."
I have used the Biography website from the library's resource file- I typed in a few adult authors and some children's book authors. Two of my favorite children's authors and illlustrater's are Don and Audrey Wood. My favorite book by them is "The Big Hungry Bear," I love the illustrations and the story that follows. Also, by reading Audrey Wood's biography- I learned that she spent part of her childhood living with a circus- as her father painted murals for the Ringling brothers circus in Florida. I think this website gives some very insightful information on book authors.

Discovery Task #10: Explore Research Databases

Well today, after getting back from the Labor Day break, I decided to do discovery task #10- I first listened to the premiere tutorial and did some searches within that database- it was nice to get a refresher course- I used this alot in the children's center. Even had a patron bring me in a cup of coffee, because I had helped her son out so much on a project. Using the Premiere file database.
Next I went to the Bibliographical databases and pulled up the Oak Ridge Boys- which only gave a brief introduction to who each of the guys in the band are. I also pulled up a bibliography on Farrah Fawcett, and with some research was able to pull up her obituary. I then went into Ted Bundy and pulled up information on him- and how he was very confused growing up. I plan to use this database more in the future.

Discovery Task #9 Easy Web Design

Well I worked on this site, and read how to create a website- I really didn't add alot to it, but it was fun to try and put together- I guess if I had more time I could create lots of different web sites, but who has the time? I think I may try and create a website at home, that would be fun. There Dave, I added another picture just for you.... Aren't they cute??

Discovery Task #8: Share, Remix, Reuse--Legally
Well I was kind of lost on this website- got confused over the whole copyright laws etc, I did sign up for bliptv, and thought I had downloaded a Toby Keith video to add to my blog, but lo and behold it didn't download right. I also signed up for Jamendo and listened to a couple of songs from a couple of albums I never even heard of before. I'm thinking I probably would not use this site with Patrons, as I myself had a hard time navigating through it. I think it would be very useful if you could understand it.

Discovery Task #7: A Sampling of Reader Resources
This task took a little longer to complete. I did have fun going into the different reader resources, each one is unique in its own way. I think my favorite was "All Readers", I played around with it the most, and found it was easy to use. I also, signed up for "Shelfarie" I will probably use both of these in the future. In Shelfari, I liked how you could put in the book you plan to read, What you are reading now, and Books I have read. I was able to add a book to what I am reading and that was pretty cool, to see it show up.

Task #6 ORE Tutorials
Had fun learning more about customer service, I think both libraries have some really good ideas for new staff coming on board, and like they say that customer's needs are changing, and customer service should reflect the changes. I thought both websites were very well done. I do think the quizzes would of been fun to do had they of been multiple choice questions. It was fun learning about two different libraries.

Millenium Opac

"Task number 5" is now completed- I like "My Library Account" to add items to my library account.
I really did like the book bag feature, where you can add many different items and request them all at the same time- I like that feature, guess I never knew you could do that before- it was fun requesting items from different libraries, and seeing what other libraries have that we don't.
Anxiously awaiting task #6 - this is a fun and exciting adventure.
